Vijnana Bharati, rooted in the ethos of Swadeshi science, emerges as a formidable force driving scientific innovation with a distinctly Indian perspective. Originating from the Swadeshi Science Movement initiated at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, under the visionary guidance of Prof. K I Vasu, this movement burgeoned into a national entity. The pivotal moment came during the Nagpur meet in 1991, where the decision was made in the presence of many luminaries and scientific fraternity to propel the Swadeshi Science Movement to a pan-Indian scale, naming it Vijnana Bharati. Today, its reach extends across India, with 35 units, and to 9 countries globally. Its 13 diverse entities and initiatives encompass a spectrum of scientific disciplines, including ayurveda, yoga, energy, and technology, along with dedicated efforts towards empowering women in science. Beyond these, Vijnana Bharati spearheads a myriad of almost 6 activities and platforms aimed at disseminating Bharatiya Vigyan in vernacular languages, exploring Vedic sciences, advancing architectural knowledge with an Indian perspective, delving into ocean sciences, and nurturing young talent through initiatives like the National Science Talent Search Exam for school students. Notable endeavors such as the Space on Wheels activity, aimed at showcasing ISRO's achievements across India, and the India International Science Festival further underscore Vijnana Bharati's commitment to fostering a culture of scientific inquiry deeply rooted in Indian heritage and innovation. A monthly science magazine named Science India is published by Vijnana Bharati.
